Make a Difference: FOSTER TODAY
Become a Foster Carer
Thinking about fostering?
Love animals but not ready to adopt just yet? Fostering could be the perfect fit. By opening your home temporarily, you give a dog the chance to heal, grow, and get ready for their forever family. And you won’t be doing it alone; Remote Animal Assistance sets you up with everything you need to care for your foster pet.
What We Provide:
- Dry food, bedding, and other essentials (plus wet food when we have it available)
- All vet costs and preventative care covered
- Support and advice on behaviour, training, and general pet care
What You’ll Do as a Foster Carer:
- Give your foster dog love, care, and a safe place to stay
- Take them to vet appointments when it works for you
- Attend meet-and-greets with potential adopters, at times that suit your schedule
How Long is the Commitment?
It really depends! Some dogs are adopted within days, while others may stay a few months. On average, most find homes within 1–3 months. We ask that you commit to at least one month and let us know if your situation changes. We’re flexible and always happy to chat about what works best for you.
How to Foster
The Foster Process
Foster Form
Complete our foster carer application form online or by downloading the printable version. You can specify your preferences for animal size, age, gender, and more.
Become a Carer
We will confirm receipt of your application and notify you of any suitable animals needing a foster home. You can choose to accept or decline any foster requests.
Facilitate Meet & Greets
In addition to caring for your foster animal, you will help arrange meet and greets with potential adopters. We will provide contact details, and you can set up a convenient time and place.
Off They Go!
If the meet and greet is successful, we will arrange for the potential adopter to start a 14-day trial with the animal. This moment is both heartbreaking and rewarding. You just helped save a life!
FAQs
Can I foster a dog I’m considering adopting?
Yes! Many adopters start out as foster carers. We can off you a two-week period where we remove your foster dog from the general adoption listings while you decide if you’d like to make them a permanent addition to your household. After this two-week period, the dog will become available for general adoption again.
Where do foster carers need to be based?
Most foster homes need to be in the Atherton Tablelands, Cairns or surrounding FNQ regions so dogs can access our partner vets and RAA’s supplies.
What about vet appointments?
RAA covers all vet costs. We work with you to book suitable appointment time at our partner clinics, and if you can’t manage transport, we’ll help find a solution.
What training does RAA provide?
You’ll receive our comprehensive Foster Care Guide plus ongoing one-on-one support, behaviour advice, and access to training resources.
How long will I be fostering for?
It varies. Some dogs need a short two-week stay, while others may require several months. We’ll always match you with a timeframe that works for your lifestyle.
What if I already have pets?
We’ll ask about your current pets and do our best to place a foster dog that will fit well in your household.
What happens if I need to stop fostering suddenly?
While we generally ask for a minimum period of one week to arrange foster movements, we will try our absolute best to arrange a new placement for the dog ASAP and will support you through the transition.
Do I need a fenced yard?
It depends on the dog. Some need secure fencing, others are fine with alternative arrangements.
What if I’m new to fostering?
No experience is required. We’ll guide you through the process and support you every step of the way.
