Our vet work process
Here at RAA, we pride ourselves on the comprehensive vet work that each dog in our care receives.
Every dog received the below veterinary care to give them the best start in their new life:
- Comprehensive health check - $90-$95
- Desexing (spey or castration) - $280 - $310
- Microchipping and lifetime registration $50-$55
- C5 vaccination (to protect dogs against distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, and kennel cough) - $260-$400 per dog
- Intestinal worming and flea/tick prevention - $20+ per month
- Heartworm test (if age-appropriate) - $40-$80
- Proheart Injection (heartworm prevention) if age appropriate - $60-$140
The routine vet work for each dog saved by RAA is typically between $780 and $890! With this in mind, we believe an adoption fee of about $390 is an absolute bargain.
Your adoption fee helps cover these expenses and ensures we can continue rescuing dogs who need us most.

Trial Commencement
Before an adoption is finalised, every dog begins a two-week trial period with their potential family.
This time allows both you and the dog to settle in, adjust to each other’s routines, and make sure the match is the right fit.
At the start of the trial, you will:
- Sign a Trial Commencement Form that outlines the terms and conditions
- Pay the adoption fee (this is refunded if the trial is not successful within the trial period)
During the trial, you’ll have the full support of the RAA team. We are here to answer questions, provide guidance, and make sure both you and your new companion feel supported.

FAQs
How long does the adoption process take?
From enquiry to finalisation, most adoptions are completed within 2.5 to 4 weeks. We do our best to ensure the process is smooth, supportive, and focused on finding the right match for both you and the dog.
What if the trial doesn’t work out?
If it’s not the right fit, the dog returns to RAA and your adoption fee is refunded (minus any agreed costs, such as transport).
Can I adopt if I rent?
Absolutely! We just require written landlord approval before a trial can begin.
Do you offer interstate adoptions?
Yes, provided the dog is healthy and has the right temperament for long-distance travel. Any transport costs are the responsibility of the adopter, and we’ll work with you to ensure the journey is as safe and stress-free as possible.
Are dogs already desexed?
Yes. All RAA dogs are desexed as soon as they are of a suitable age (typically around 6 months old). If the dog is too young for desexing at time of adoption, the adoption fee includes the cost of the procedure to be completed at a later date.
What if the dog has ongoing medical needs?
We are transparent about any known health conditions, and we will explain what kind of care or costs may be involved before you commit to a trial.

What support do I get during the trial?
Our team is available to answer questions, provide advice, and help you and your dog settle in smoothly.
Do I need a fenced yard?
It depends on the individual dog’s needs. Some dogs require secure fencing, while others may be suitable for alternative living arrangements.
What if I already have other pets?
We’ll ask for details on your current pets in the enquiry form, and we can arrange safe introductions during the meet and greet.
